London moments at One Aldwych

On a lightning quick visit to London last month, I had the immense pleasure of staying at One Aldwych. It describes itself as ‘the definitive contemporary luxury hotel’ and that is not an exaggeration!

Situated in a classic Edwardian building that 100 years ago even housed the presses of a newspaper, One Aldwych is one of London’s last independent, privately owned hotels. It is beautiful, stylish, classic but with the right modern touches to make a stay truly memorable. Set in the heart of Covent Garden, One Aldwych is perfectly located for discovering small boutiques, designer shops and some of the world’s best restaurants and theaters.

We stayed in a large deluxe room, with a massive, extremely comfortable bed and, very important, complimentary internet that was faster than I have at home! But even though One Aldwych is a luxury 5 star hotel and one of the famous Leading Hotels of the World, I didn’t spend much time in the room!

We were invited for a cocktail testing in the beautiful Lobby Bar, that was nominated as one of the top 5 cocktail bars in London. As you can tell from the pictures, we enjoyed a few phenomenal cocktails that were all made from the finest ingredients. As an example: I’m not a huge fan of gin tonic, but the Lobby Bar serves a truly remarkable version made from special gin and infused with fresh fruit that add a unique flavor.

For dinner, One Aldwych offers two distinctly different restaurants. We enjoyed a lovely three course dinner with beautiful wines at Indigo Restaurant on the second floor, at a table perched above the Lobby Bar that offered beautiful views towards the South Bank and the bustling London traffic. And I am planning to definitely return for dinner at Eneko, the highly anticipated Basque restaurant from three Michelin-starred chef Eneko Atxa, that opens 1st September. The boyfriend has heard people raving for years about Atxa’s restaurant Azurmendi in Bilbao, voted no. 16 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, so he will jump at the chance to check out Eneko.

If you have followed my travel reports, you may have noticed I love room service breakfast. A quick call was all it took to have a very friendly waiter knock on our door a few minutes later with a table full of sweet and savory delights, fantastic coffee and fresh fruit juices. It made me very curious about another treat I can’t wait to try next time but didn’t have time for this stay, which is one of the oldest British traditions: Afternoon Tea. A highlight is the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tea but I think I’ll be good with any of the homemade cotton candy lollipops, fresh jams and blueberry brioches.

Luckily, I did have a chance to try out one of my favorite features of One Aldwych, which is the hotel spa. All guests have access to the outstanding facilities in the health club: a large chlorine-free pool (with underwater music, very Harry Potter-like), sauna, Turkish bath / steam room and large rain showers.

I was treated to a One OSKIA Glow on the Go Facial. After a thorough examination of my skin, the very friendly and professional therapist gave me a few very detailed pointers on skin care that I have been following ever since!

We walked around Covent Garden before heading to the airport and stumbled upon a lovely Korean street food place, which made us a bit late for the Gatwick Express that also turned out to suffer from delays. Long story short, we missed our flight, had to buy new tickets and since a round trip ticket was cheaper than a one way flight, we are going back to London very soon!!

  1. Dear Merel,
first I have to tell you that I love your boots and your olive green coat. Both are totally my taste!
The hotel looks like a great place. I like the mix of classic and modern style.
That sounds good to go back to the UK because of the round trip ticket 😉 Sometimes there comes a lot of good luck with situations that seem to be bad 🙂 I am curious about your next London trip and I definitely stay tuned :-*
    Have a wonderful day, Merel!
