When I started planning for my first trip to Hong Kong, I quickly realized how little I really knew about this amazing city. I was advised to stay in Kowloon, which I experienced as the most authentic part of Hong Kong. That is how we chose the excellent Pentahotel, in the heart of Kowloon. Kowloon is really a city to itself that looks much older than the development on Hong Kong island. I loved the small, busy streets, authentic shops and restaurants in Kowloon. It is obvious that all the development on the harbour front will make this area a new hotspot.
I loved coming back to the Pentahotel every night. It is a new building, with a modern atmosphere and very trendy design. But I loved touches like a very comfortable bed (still the most important thing in a hotel) and the Maxibar: the vending machine that offers way more than a minibar ever could, for much lower prices! The cleaning lady on our floor practically became a friend of the family, enthusiastically waving us goodbye every morning as she swept into our room to clean meticulously, leaving behind goodies like a small cute amenities bag filled with shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush and hand soap.
Make sure to ask for a room on a high floor, like we had, because the view over Kowloon is stunning in each direction. The gym has state of the art equipment which you’re going to need, because there is a pizza oven with its own enormous oven downstairs 😉 And in the summer, you can use the outdoor pool and do laps to get rid of the extra pepperoni.
Getting around the various parts of Hong Kong is extremely easy thanks to MTR, the excellent subway system that spans the entire city. From Hong Kong Island to the Pentahotel deep in Kowloon only took about 20 minutes, which is just amazing considering the distance you actually cover in that time.
I have to admit I didn’t see enough of the third part of Hong Kong, the so called New Territories, that lie further inland towards China but also include the other islands off the coast. I hope to be back soon and see more of Hong Kong, because there is so much to explore.
