Back in Hawaii at the all new Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger

On my fourth trip to Hawaii I had the pleasure to stay at an Outrigger property again, this time at the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger on Oahu. It is the sister property of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort where we stayed last time, just across the street. While that property is located right on the beach, the Beachcomber is more a city style boutique hotel, although the ocean is less than a block away. It’s practically a brand new hotel, by the way, as it underwent a $35 million(!) renovation last year in which ‘every wall has been touched.’

LOCATION //
Located in the heart of Waikiki between the two main boulevards, Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenue, the retro high-rise is the perfect starting point for venturing into Waikiki. A large escalator took us from the street level to the lobby on the 2nd floor. I immediately liked the ocean theme that reverberates around the hotel. As we were checking in I looked around and spotted the Maui Brewing Company and the Aroma Cafe, with the pool behind it, across the lobby. What a way to get into the Aloha spirit!

ROOM //
Two bottles of prosecco welcomed us to our bright and spacious room and we opened them on the balcony, while enjoying the view over Waikiki and the Pacific. The Beachcomber has its own style, that I can probably best describe as ‘beachy’ or ‘sunny.’  The print on one wall was a beautiful picture of the inside of a wave and the mix of blue and sand colors really made me feel at home quickly. I learned later that local photographer Zac Noyle took these pictures from in, or better said, underneath the breaking waves!

As much as I loved the ocean theme, I have to admit it’s really nice to stay in a modern hotel that has USB ports everywhere and a huge tv with Netflix… I know, I know, I should be outside enjoying the island, but a girl has to edit pictures and upload Instagram Stories as well and what better place to work than in a super comfy bed, with the sliding doors to the balcony wide open to enjoy the spectacular Hawaiian sunset! No less than seventy percent of the rooms at the Beachcomber have ocean views and I highly recommend booking one of them.

FOOD //
I especially loved breakfast at the super-instagrammable Hawaiian Aroma Café, that serves sandwiches, pastries and incredible Hawaiian Kona coffee. Definitely try the vanilla or macademia nut blends when you have the chance. And don’t be thrown off by the brewery part of the Maui Brewing Company, because it’s a solid comfort food drinks and dinner choice where I particularly enjoyed the live music in the afternoons.

Fun tip: hang out by the square shaped swimming pool before sunset with a nice cocktail and enjoy the tunes from one of the many talented singers and guitar players who perform at the Maui Brewing Company. Or do the opposite and get up bright and early for poolside yoga and have an açaí bowl at the Aroma Cafe afterwards.

One thing that strikes me every time we’re in Waikiki, is how much it costs to park your rental car. I understand that space is at a premium and therefore so is parking, which is why I loved the free trolley service that the Outrigger hotels offer guests. You can hop on and go east towards the zoo, the aquarium and around Diamond Head (don’t forget to stop at the lookout to marvel at the surfers, foilers and SUP-pers down there!) or go west in the direction of Ala Moana Mall. Or just hop on and ride it all the way around, because the trolley service runs full circle. Remember: it’s Hawaii, so take your time, kick back and enjoy!
