In my previous post about the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Resort I mentioned Ithaa, the first glassed undersea restaurant in the world. I have been to the Al Mahara restaurant under the famous Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, so at first I had doubts about that claim.
But it’s true: the Al Mahara is actually built inside a giant aquarium, whereas visiting Ithaa is truly like you’re in a glass submarine that’s temporarily parked on the ocean floor. There are fish in every direction and if you look up, you see the waves roll by on the ocean surface. It is a surreal experience, that hopefully comes across in these pictures!
The question most people ask is: ‘how deep is it?’ It’s actually 16 feet under sea level, about 5 meter. Ithaa was built in its entirety and then lowered into the ocean. For a second I entertained the idea to swim down from the surface and have a picture taken from inside the restaurant, but that would have probably scared the fish.
I loved how intimate the experience felt, since the restaurant can host a maximum of 14 people. So if you go, book way in advance, or have a cocktail or glass of champagne there in the afternoon.
Ithaa is open for lunch and dinner, but we went there for a mid morning glass of champagne that did not disappoint! I was wearing a comfortable but stylish dress by Lulu Yasmine, that went well with my bare feet. Why, you may ask? Well, the Conrad Rangali encourages bare feet and that’s a motto I love!
