A WINTER WONDERLAND AT HOTEL DAS CENTRAL

It has been almost two years since we first stayed at Hotel Das Central in Sölden. That was a visit in the summer and ever since, I have wondered what this wonderful place would be like in the snow. With the Electric Mountain Festival going off for two days, I figured it would be a great time to enjoy Sölden in an entirely different setting.

Like the first time we stayed at Hotel Das Central, we were greeted warmly by the friendly staff and were quickly checked into the beautiful Edelweiss Suite. It has a modern vibe with a cozy, Tyrolean touch. One of the small subtle gestures I loved about Das Central, is how they always managed to do turn down service or make up our rooms when we were not there. It is so nice to return from dinner to find your curtains closed and bed made, with a delicious chocolate surprise on your pillow. Waking up each morning and opening the curtains opened up a beautiful vista of the Ötztal mountains towards Italy, which was breathtaking every day for this girl from the lowlands!

The boyfriend learned how to ski when he was just 7 years old, but this was going to be my first time ever on the slopes. I wisely chose to take some ski courses and made sure that even if perhaps my skiing skills were going to be horrible, at least I would try to look good in outfits by Goldbergh! A little bit to my surprise, I loved skiing and after only 5 hours of classes I found myself going up the mountain in a chairlift. The next afternoon, after a few more hours of ski classes, the boyfriend took me up the mountain a few times again and gave a few tips about how the snow is harder on the shadow side, or mushy when having faced the sun. I love skiing and hope to do this for many years to come!

I have to say, what’s not to love about skiing when the sun is shining, the snow is smooth and there is a top quality restaurant at 10,000 feet (3.000 meter) like ICE Q? Unfortunately, the new James Bond experience based on the movie Spectre next to ICE Q wasn’t open yet, but that’s alright: it gives me another reason to come back! It looks like a spectacular venue, because it offers 360 degree views of all the mountains and is supposed to bring James Bond stories to life right there.

Lunch at ICE Q was amazing again, so tasty and fresh and nothing too heavy. Great to enjoy when you still have to go skiing afterwards and from what I understand, it’s such a rare treasure to have such top quality food on these mountain slopes!

The last two days of our stay in Sölden coincided with the Electric Mountain Festival, which is an incredibly cool EDM event on the mountain. I loved how the festival was free for anyone that had a skipass, so nobody had to buy an extra ticket. Yet there were some of the world’s most popular dj’s performing, many from my native Holland, like Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Don Diablo, Lady Bee and Oliver Heldens. My personal favorite was Jonas Blue from the UK, whose tunes I have been listening to a lot over the last years.

We had a special pass that included a great lunch and a seemingly endless supply of drinks at restaurant Wirtshaus, so we spent two sunny afternoons enjoying the festival from their wonderful terrace looking right at the stage, with the Giggijoch mountain looming large behind it. Everybody was so happy and partying, the vibe was great and the weather was just unbelievable. This was something I will never forget!

After all the excitement on the mountain, skiing and dancing, the Venezia waterworld at Das Central provided a welcome change of pace. It has been updated since our last visit but still has the impeccable saunas, ice room, relax spaces (including one with a Japanese touch!) and lovely pool.

After skiing, dancing and lounging down at the Venezia waterworld, the dinner at Hotel Das Central deserves a special mention. We thoroughly enjoyed a five course buffet dinner with an incredibly diverse salad bar as the starter, or a four course a la carte menu with terrific meat, fish or vegetarian options. Breakfast is also a feast, with beautiful bread, lots of fruit, cheeses, fruit juices, cereals, muesli’s and many wonderful local egg, ham and sausage specialties.

I’m sure you already caught onto this, but I’m planning to make skiing an annual thing and I can’t wait to get back to Hotel Das Central in Sölden, Austria. If you’re looking for quality skiing or snowboarding, a fantastic hotel with a full spa and if you love food, this is the place to go in the Alps.

  1. Your photos are always so magical, it’s the third post I’ve seen and I love it so much. I think ghe hotel looks great (I especially like pictures in the pool, they look like a professional catalogue). I learned skiing recently as well so I can totally relate. It’s great you were brave enough to go up and try yourself – I had problems with it at first.

  5. This place looks absolutely incredible, I am insanely jealous being homestuck in Wales lol. The place looks so rustic, and the surroundings seem to be breathtakingly beautiful. I adore your photographs as always, they really paint the whole place really well.

    Have a great weekend!
